A South African company building the infrastructure for African nature capital.
Muranga Labs is a private company in Johannesburg. We make it possible for corporate sustainability teams, pharmaceutical manufacturers and traditional healers to work off the same record without anyone losing control of their own data.
Why we exist
For a long time, the value taken from African medicinal plants has only moved one way. Outsiders documented the knowledge, communities did the harvesting, labs ran the chemistry, and patents went to whoever filed first. The healers whose knowledge made the discovery possible were rarely named and almost never paid.
We built Muranga to stop that pattern repeating. Every contribution is recorded against the person who made it. When that contribution is used, the system pays them. The whole thing runs on consent — given when they sign up, in the language they use.
What we are
We are a private South African company, based in Johannesburg, working across Southern Africa. We operate under South African law. The data sits in South African data centres. We answer to the South African Information Regulator.
We are not a thin wrapper over American or European software. We are not a research project, and we are not a foundation. We are a company building software that pharmaceutical manufacturers, sustainability teams and traditional healers all use on the same day, in the same system.
What we are not
We are not a carbon-credit broker. We are not a marketplace for traditional remedies. We are not an “AI for Africa” brand. We do not extract, centralise or export data.
Where we came from
Founded in 2025 by a team with backgrounds in infrastructure, pharmaceutical manufacturing, conservation finance and the traditional knowledge communities of KwaZulu-Natal. Funded carefully. Built to last beyond the founders.
